NHS 10 year plan

The NHS is essential for maintaining health in the UK. It provides mostly free healthcare through various services, such as GP practices and Accident & Emergency departments for urgent issues.

At Isle of Wight NHS Trust and Portsmouth Hospitals, our staff are working harder than ever to deliver the best care to our communities. The needs of our communities are changing and we are seeing much higher demand for hospital care and people with many complex health needs.

To meet our communities’ needs, we need to change the way we provide care.

Last year, we launched our Clinical Strategy, which gives us a plan for making these changes. We want to regularly gather your views and opinions to ensure this plan focuses on the right areas for change and improvement. We published our strategy just before Lord Darzi's report and the national engagement on the NHS 10-Year Health Plan. Both are closely related and highlight the need for changes in how we deliver healthcare, so we are working with the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England to help create the 10-Year Health Plan based on the views of our communities.

We have put together a quick survey to gather your views on three key areas:

  1. moving care from hospitals to communities,
  2. better use of technology
  3. more focus on preventing health concerns.

What you have to say about health and social care is important. Please can you help us by answering these questions.

1. Below are some ways that the NHS could use technology (some of these are already happening in some parts of the NHS, and some are new): Which type of technology is most important you?

Healthcare in the community aims to support people to stay healthy, manage long-term conditions, and live independently at home. People of all ages use healthcare in the community from birth to end of life. Services are provided in various locations like homes, clinics, and schools, by professionals such as nurses, pharmacists, allied health professionals, and GPs, along with support from carers and self-management.

2. What difference (good or bad) would moving more care from hospitals to communities make to you?

More could be done to help the nation stay healthier for longer. Smoking causes 25% of cancer deaths, more than half of the population is overweight or obese, and poor mental health can lead to unemployment. We can help prevent illness by offering more screening services for early disease detection, providing better support for quitting smoking, and running weight management programs to promote healthier lifestyles. These actions could lower long-term costs for the NHS and help people lead healthier, more active lives for longer.

3. What difference (good or bad) would preventing sickness, not just treating it, make to you?
